ART OF WORDS Poets' Open Mic

This popular monthly event, co-hosted by Tamell "Big" Bailey and CathyB, is a great opportunity for adults and young adults to practice performance skills in front of a small audience, receive feedback, and get inspiration for creating new works. Open mic performances are limited to 3 minutes and may be on any “radio friendly” topic. If time allows, additional performances may be invited.

FEATURED PERFORMER

John “Stoney” Cannon is an author, poet, singer-songwriter, music journalist, and lifelong pop-culture junkie from Aiken, South Carolina. A storyteller at heart, Stoney blends personal memories, humor, nostalgia, music, and the strange little moments of everyday life into his writing and spoken-word work. He is the author of the Sorry We Missed Your Call book series, including Glam Rock and Rock & Roll Horror Show, as well as VHS: A Video Horror Story, A Cryptic Collection: Stories, Poems, Songs & Other Bad Ideas, and a book celebrating the world of professional wrestling. His writing has also appeared in music publications, and he currently publishes his ongoing collection of stories, observations, nostalgia, and pop-culture rabbit holes on Substack.

As a singer-songwriter, Stoney has written and recorded music spanning rock, power pop, glam, Southern rock, and everything in between. His poetry and spoken-word pieces often carry the same fingerprints as his music and prose: personal, humorous, occasionally irreverent, and always rooted in storytelling. Whether he’s writing a song, spinning a story, remembering a movie, or simply talking over a cup of coffee, Stoney’s goal is pretty simple: tell a good story and hopefully make somebody feel something along the way.
